  • Surface Gallery’s final show opens for First Friday

    After bringing young, professional, urban art to downtown Bakersfield’s gallery scene since 2008, Surface Gallery has announced it will close at the end of May. Its final show, inspired by bicycles, is a nod to Bike Month and Bakersfield’s growing cycling culture. The show opens Friday, May 7, along with a host of other downtown gallery activities planned for First Friday.

  • Join the BE team as we walk to support the arts

    The Walk for the Arts on Saturday, May 15, is a 5K ramble around Bakersfield’s Downtown Arts District. Organized by the Arts Council of Kern, it is a fundraiser for organizations to raise money for their arts programs. Join the Bakersfield Express team to support the arts and our mission for “Expressing community through arts, culture and civic involvement.”

    Carolers, carriage rides, Christmas shopping and photos with Santa turn this month’s First Friday arts stroll into a holiday celebration. Friday evening, Dec. 4, the Downtown Arts District will feature a variety of events for adults, children and even pooches.
