Education expert to speak at Garden Party fundraiser
Education expert and cameo star in the Sundance Film Festival’s best documentary of 2010 “Waiting for Superman,” Lance Izumi, will be guest speaker at Garden Pathway’s Garden Party fundraiser Thursday, Nov. 18. Proceeds will expand the classroom facilities of Garden Pathways and increase mentoring and education services.

Eco-dramas take stage at Center of the World Festival
The second year of Pine Mountain Club’s storytelling and amateur playwriting contest explores the relationship between humans and the environment. The festival, Aug. 20-22, is held at the foot of Mount Pinos, which the local Chumash consider the “Center of the World.”

Nonprofit to honor ‘Women with a Heart for Bakersfield’
Garden Pathways, which offers mentoring to youth and families in Bakersfield, will honor four local women with records of exceptional community service and leadership: Kim Albers, Cathy Butler, Susan Hersberger and Dayna Nichols. The High Tea will be held June 9.

Organized by the Arts Council of Kern, it is a fundraiser for organizations to raise money for their arts programs. Artists represent isolation, loss associated with homelessness
New exhibits opening Dec. 10 at the Bakersfield Museum of Art portray life on the edge of society for those who are displaced or homeless. The opening reception also includes a blanket drive for the Bakersfield Homeless Center.
