    After taking a hiatus in July, Bakersfield’s premier arts and culture event is back this Friday, Aug. 6, with new and familiar works of art – as well as a fifth birthday celebration for Kuka’s Folk Art.

    Opening this First Friday, Metro Galleries’ new exhibit, “Seasons of Her Life” featuring artist Barbara Reid, looks at life as a cyclical adventure akin to nature’s timetable.

  • Surface Gallery’s final show opens for First Friday

    After bringing young, professional, urban art to downtown Bakersfield’s gallery scene since 2008, Surface Gallery has announced it will close at the end of May. Its final show, inspired by bicycles, is a nod to Bike Month and Bakersfield’s growing cycling culture. The show opens Friday, May 7, along with a host of other downtown gallery activities planned for First Friday.

  • Join the BE team as we walk to support the arts

    The Walk for the Arts on Saturday, May 15, is a 5K ramble around Bakersfield’s Downtown Arts District. Organized by the Arts Council of Kern, it is a fundraiser for organizations to raise money for their arts programs. Join the Bakersfield Express team to support the arts and our mission for “Expressing community through arts, culture and civic involvement.”

  • Newest downtown gallery takes art underground

    Artists and business partners Deon Bell and John Moore have teamed up to open The Bellmoore, a gallery in a downtown basement. The gallery is for both emerging and established artists to show their work. Video by Gabriel Briano; story and photos by Terry Telford.

  • Two new art galleries open in time for First Friday

    This First Friday will see two new galleries downtown: The Bakersfield Art Association’s new Arts Center, plus a reincarnation of Deon Bell’s basement gallery in the form of The Bellmoore, in partnership with artist John Moore. Plus, new exhibits at Metro Galleries, Juliana’s Art Studio and Gallery, and more.

  • The Scene: Artists open new doors this First Friday

    Local artists turn salvaged doors into works of creativity in “Opening Doors to the Arts,” a collaboration between BECA and Metro Galleries. VIEW OUR SLIDESHOW. Also opening this First Friday is an exhibit of pigment-and-wax encaustic art at Surface Gallery.

  • Padre Hotel opens, but not quite for business

    Malfunctioning elevators put a glitch in the historic hotel’s opening Monday morning, but management left the doors unlocked for curious visitors to get a cup of complimentary coffee and marvel at the décor inside.
