Don Thompson, local poet, to read at Russo’s on Aug. 11
Kevin Shah praises a local poet of some renown, Don Thompson, who will give a free reading of his poems at Russo’s Books at 7 p.m. Aug. 11. Shah runs an open mic on that night and generally on the second Thursday of each month, during which the public is invited to participate by reading their own works, if they wish.

FLICS season opens with community outreach events
The first two foreign films of the FLICS season contain themes of sexual assault and Mexican immigration, prompting local organizations to partner with the film society for outreach. The 2010-11 FLICS season begins Sept. 17.

Youth encouraged to audition for Singing Camp
Former American Idol contestant Amy Adams is partnering with Garden Pathways to offer two sessions of “Singing Camp” this summer. Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. July 6 for youth ages 9 to 18. The camp is part of an initiative to mentor youth through the arts.

As the Kern County Board of Supervisors enters its final round of budget hearings Wednesday, it will take into consideration all of the public comment it has received – both at the public hearing Monday night and through letters and phone calls. At stake are local arts programs, libraries, youth agriculture, anti-graffiti, and other quality of life programs.

After a Bakersfield group visited Korea representing arts programs for the developmentally disabled, a Korean contingent is in Bakersfield for the next two weeks. They are here to learn how to set up a filmmaking workshop as part a new program for independent living in Korea.
