    The Arts Council of Kern is holding an informational meeting Tuesday, June 22, for artists to learn about three opportunities for juried art exhibits: A tactile exhibit at the Center for the Blind, a bicycle-themed show for KernCOG’s 40th anniversary, and a display of art inspired by oil or West Kern for Taft’s “Oildorado Days.”

    After a Bakersfield group visited Korea representing arts programs for the developmentally disabled, a Korean contingent is in Bakersfield for the next two weeks. They are here to learn how to set up a filmmaking workshop as part a new program for independent living in Korea.

  • Join the BE team as we walk to support the arts

    The Walk for the Arts on Saturday, May 15, is a 5K ramble around Bakersfield’s Downtown Arts District. Organized by the Arts Council of Kern, it is a fundraiser for organizations to raise money for their arts programs. Join the Bakersfield Express team to support the arts and our mission for “Expressing community through arts, culture and civic involvement.”

    The current exhibit at the Younger Gallery shows the power of positive encouragement. Art instructor Claudia True has helped many timid Bakersfield artists believe in themselves. The result is seen in the show “Claudia True and Friends: Under the Influence” through May 24.

  • Celebrate the ‘Art of Downtown’ at street faire

    Artists and performers will take to the streets along Chester Avenue for the Art of Downtown Street Faire, featuring family activities, art demonstrations, and more. Also don’t miss local acts Soulajar and Near Miss Mallet at the Fox Theater and an opening reception for Alberto Herrera at the JP Jennings Center for the Arts.

    Former tagger Thomas Lucero joins Bakersfield’s anti-graffiti movement by helping paint a mural at the Stop the Violence headquarters in East Bakersfield.
