  • Inner city LA farmers put down organic roots in Buttonwillow

    Four years after being evicted from their 14-acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles, these city farmers-turned-nonprofit cooperative have opened a new, 85-acre farm in Buttonwillow – and added Kern County to its mission to serve communities with affordable, accessible, organic, pesticide-free produce.

  • Arts supporters rally in face of county budget cuts

    In the face of severe budget cuts to arts programs by the Kern County Board of Supervisors, a “Save the Arts” rally and meeting will be held for arts supporters to plan their response at an upcoming public hearing.

  • Chorus performance will be a gay old time

    About 100 of the more than 250 members of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus are performing Sunday at the Fox Theater – with a little accompaniment by Bakersfield’s own Rainbow Voices Choir. The S.F. director predicts laughter, tears and goosebumps in the audience.

  • Another brick out of the wall: Evolving journalism ethics

    Technology and the down economy have created a tumultuous time for ethical issues in the media industry. But it has also created a time of experimentation, out of which websites such as Bakersfield Express have been born. Join BE editor Jennifer Baldwin and other local news experts for a panel discussion on “The Future of Journalism Ethics” at 7 p.m., May 19, at CSUB.

  • Join the BE team as we walk to support the arts

    The Walk for the Arts on Saturday, May 15, is a 5K ramble around Bakersfield’s Downtown Arts District. Organized by the Arts Council of Kern, it is a fundraiser for organizations to raise money for their arts programs. Join the Bakersfield Express team to support the arts and our mission for “Expressing community through arts, culture and civic involvement.”

  • Local foundation enters arts funding arena

    The Kern Community Foundation is deciding how to allocate $185,000 in grant money to support local arts and culture. Arts organizations will be invited to workshops to learn about the grant and give feedback as to how the money should be awarded.

  • Public mural unveiled as latest in fight against graffiti

    Former tagger Thomas Lucero joins Bakersfield’s anti-graffiti movement by helping paint a mural at the Stop the Violence headquarters in East Bakersfield.

  • Battle makes early withdrawal from city council race

    The executive director of Stop the Violence, Sean Battle, has announced he will not be running for Irma Carson’s Ward 1 seat on the Bakersfield City Council afterall. Seven others have filed intentions to run for the position.

  • Join Bakersfield Express for a community cleanup day

    Join our team for the Great American Cleanup on April 17. We’ll pick up litter or paint over graffiti, receive free T-shirts, and attend a free lunch and awards ceremony afterward. RSVP by April 1.
