After a July hiatus (hey, it was HOT), downtown Bakersfield’s premier arts and culture event returns this Friday. Although it still may be warm, and there aren’t a whole lot of new exhibits opening, there are still some good reasons to head downtown for First Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 6.

Metro Galleries
1604 19th St.

Gallery owner Don Martin says there will be new works by local artists Gita Lloyd and Nicole Saint John. Also, see the continuation of Barbara Reid’s “Seasons of her Life” exhibit, as well as works by Lily Stockman, Heidi Rufeh and Betty Hock. Isaiah Morfin will provide live music on the patio and refreshments will be available.

Kuka’s Folk Art
1609 19th St.

It’s Kuka’s fifth birthday, and owner Ruth Darrington is having a sale to celebrate. Almost all of the shop’s Latin American art and gifts will be at least 20 percent off. Birthday cake will be served at 6:30 p.m., and as always there will be homemade salsa. Eat, shop and enjoy the art on the sidewalk.

Bakersfield Art Center
1817 Eye St.

Continuing its show “Beyond the Valley,” which opened July 1, the Bakersfield Art Association takes us to exotic places with its collection of art. Participating artists include Beverly Carrick, Elaine Collins, Sherry Dolan, Norma Eaton, Floyd Dillon, Lila Martin, Emily Mbong, Phyllis Oliver, Mel Paleo, Chris Romanini, Shirley Rowles, Cindy Stiles, Don Trainor, Jeanie Truitt, and Charlotte White.

Sidewalk exhibits
19th and Eye Streets

As always, a unique blend of crafters and artists, such as those from BECA (Bakersfield Emerging Contemporary Artists) show and sell their wares along the sidewalks of the Downtown Arts District.
